From Frigates to Submarines: Decoding the Indian Navy’s 2026 Induction Spree
For a navy, numbers matter—but what matters more is what those numbers represent. In 2026, the Indian Navy’s rapidly expanding induction calendar is beginning to look less like a series of isolated ship commissions and more like a carefully assembled maritime strategy. From stealth frigates and anti-submarine craft to survey vessels and nuclear-powered submarines, the fleet is receiving platforms designed for very different kinds of warfare.
The scale is striking. In February, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi said the navy was planning to induct around 15 warships in 2026, following the commissioning of 12 warships and one submarine in 2025. By August, several of those additions had already entered service.
So, what exactly is India building—and why is the navy expanding in so many directions at once?

One of the clearest stories of 2026 is the continuing arrival of the Project 17A Nilgiri-class stealth frigates.

In April, INS Taragiri joined the fleet as the fourth Project 17A frigate. At approximately 6,670 tonnes, the warship has been designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. Its reduced radar cross-section, modern sensors and multi-role capabilities are intended to make it effective against threats in the air, on the surface and beneath the sea.

Then came INS Mahendragiri, commissioned at Visakhapatnam on July 11. It is the sixth ship of the seven-vessel Project 17A programme, bringing the class tantalisingly close to completion. The Ministry of Defence describes the frigates as multi-mission platforms designed for anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare (ASW).
The significance goes beyond individual ships. Project 17A represents the maturation of India's ability to design and construct sophisticated frontline warships domestically. Mahendragiri, for instance, has about 75% indigenous content, according to the Ministry of Defence.
In other words, India isn't simply adding frigates; it is strengthening an entire domestic naval-industrial ecosystem.

Perhaps the best illustration of the Navy's broader strategy came on June 21, when three very different vessels were commissioned together: INS Dunagiri, INS Agray and INS Sanshodhak.
INS Dunagiri is another Project 17A stealth frigate, built for frontline combat. INS Agray belongs to the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft programme, while INS Sanshodhak is a survey vessel designed to improve the Navy's understanding of the underwater environment.
That combination is revealing.
Modern naval warfare is not simply about having the biggest missile-carrying ship. A powerful fleet needs combatants, submarine hunters, intelligence and surveillance assets, hydrographic information and platforms capable of operating close to shore. The June commissioning effectively demonstrated all three dimensions in one stroke.
And the trend had begun earlier. In February, INS Anjadip was commissioned as part of the eight-ship ASW Shallow Water Craft programme. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, it is specifically designed for operations in India's coastal and shallow-water environments.

- The Submarine Hunters Are Multiplying

There is a reason anti-submarine warfare appears repeatedly in the 2026 induction story: the underwater domain is becoming increasingly important in the Indian Ocean.
Large frigates can hunt submarines, but smaller ASW craft have a different advantage. Designed for littoral waters, vessels such as the Mahe-class craft can patrol areas where larger warships may be ill-suited to operate.

INS Malvan, commissioned at Karwar on July 22, is the second Mahe-class ASW Shallow Water Craft. The Ministry of Defence says the ship has more than 80% indigenous content and is intended to strengthen India's anti-submarine warfare capability.
Together with Anjadip and Agray, Malvan points towards a Navy increasingly concerned with what may be moving silently beneath India's coastal waters.

The most strategically consequential development of 2026 lies beneath the surface.
In April, reports emerged of the induction of INS Aridhaman, India's third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, or SSBN (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear). The International Institute for Strategic Studies subsequently assessed that Aridhaman had been commissioned on April 3, while also noting the lack of official confirmation from New Delhi.
That distinction is important. Conventional warships are publicly celebrated at commissioning ceremonies; strategic nuclear assets operate under a much greater veil of secrecy.
Aridhaman's reported entry into service nevertheless represents another step in India's effort to build a credible sea-based nuclear deterrent. Unlike conventional submarines, SSBNs are designed primarily to provide a survivable second-strike capability. Their value lies not merely in attacking an adversary but in ensuring that India's nuclear deterrent cannot easily be neutralised.
The submarine story, therefore, operates on an entirely different strategic plane from the frigates and ASW craft.

- It Is Really About a Layered Indian Navy

Put all these inductions together and the larger picture becomes clearer.
The frigates provide long-range surface combat power. The ASW vessels strengthen protection against underwater threats close to India's shores. Survey ships improve maritime awareness. And the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine adds another layer to strategic deterrence.
This is what makes the 2026 induction spree significant. It isn't simply about adding hulls to a fleet. It is about creating a layered maritime force, capable of operating from shallow coastal waters to the deep ocean and from conventional warfare to strategic deterrence.
It is also a story about where those ships are being built. Taragiri and Mahendragiri emerged from Indian shipyards; Cochin Shipyard built Malvan; Anjadip and the other ASW craft reflect the growing role of domestic naval construction. Even the steel used for Taragiri came from India's own steel industry, demonstrating how naval indigenisation increasingly extends beyond the shipyards themselves.
For decades, India's naval modernisation was often discussed in terms of what the country needed. The events of 2026 suggest a different question is increasingly relevant: how quickly can India build it?
From stealth frigates slicing through the waves to submarine hunters prowling coastal waters—and a strategic submarine disappearing beneath the ocean—the Indian Navy's 2026 expansion is ultimately about building the ability to see, fight, deter and endure across every layer of the maritime battlefield. And that may be the most important story behind the numbers.
