BrahMos and Beyond: India's Missile Arsenal Explained
India's missile programme has grown into one of the most credible deterrents in the region, thanks to its pioneer, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. From BrahMos, the world's fastest supersonic cruise missile in service, to the long-range Agni series built for strategic reach, each system reflects years of indigenous research and steady investment in self-reliance. These aren't just tactical military weapons; they're markers of how far India's defence capabilities have evolved.
Today, let’s take a look at the key missiles shaping India's arsenal today, what makes each one significant, and how they fit into the country's broader defence strategy.

At the heart of India's strategic military deterrence sits the Agni family, a programme that has transformed the country's standing among the world's missile powers.
The Agni-V, the crown of this lineage, is a nuclear-capable, three-stage, road-mobile missile with a range exceeding 5,000 km. It is developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is capable of releasing multiple independently targetable nuclear warheads from a single launch. It's a capability only a handful of nations possess, India being one of them.

Behind the Agni-V stand its predecessors, the Agni-I to Agni-IV. They are shorter-range nuclear-capable systems that formed the backbone of India's missile deterrence through the 2000s and 2010s.

BrahMos remains the name most Indians associate with precision strike. Jointly developed with Russia, it is the fastest supersonic cruise missile in operational service. The same missile system arms naval destroyers, Su-30MKI fighters, and mobile land launchers, giving India a strike option that can be tailored to nearly any theatre, any target, at short notice. BrahMos was most recently used in Operation Sindoor, where it showed the world its power.
Alongside BrahMos, Nirbhay plays a pioneering role. It is India’s first indigenously produced long-range subsonic cruise missile, featuring a strike range of up to 1,000 kilometres. It trades outright speed for reach and low-altitude, terrain-hugging flight, the kind of profile built to slip past radar cover and strike deep.

Then there's Shaurya, a nuclear-capable, hypersonic, canister-launched missile that blurs the line between tactical flexibility and strategic reach. Adapted for land launch, Shaurya can be stored and transported for years without maintenance, then fired within minutes when needed. It is less discussed publicly than BrahMos, but no less significant to the country's overall deterrence posture.

- Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs)

Deterrence isn't only about missiles that fly from land. Nuclear-capable, submarine-launched ballistic missiles are designed to arm the Arihant-class submarines of India's nuclear triad. The K series forms this arsenal that is named after Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, missile scientist and India's 11th President, who was central to the country's missile and space programmes.

The K-15, also known as Sagarika, is a two-stage submarine-launched ballistic missile that was designed for retaliatory nuclear strikes. With a range of around 750 km, it was designed specifically to arm the Arihant-class submarines.
The K-4 is India's longer-range submarine-launched ballistic missile, built to extend the Navy's underwater strike reach well beyond what the K-15 could offer. Nuclear-capable, with a reported range of roughly 3,500 km, it lets Arihant-class submarines threaten distant targets while staying safely within Indian waters. Where K-15 proved the concept, K-4 scales it up, giving India's sea-based deterrent the depth and distance needed to complete its nuclear triad convincingly.
Beyond K-15 and K-4, two more are in development:
K-5: an SLBM under development, reported range of 5,000 to 8,000 km, positioning it as an ICBM-class weapon for the sea leg of the triad.
K-6: also under development, with a much longer reported range of 8,000 to 10,000 km and MIRV capability, intended for the future S5-class submarines rather than the current Arihant class.
Both extend the same logic as K-15 and K-4: push range and stealth further out to sea as India's submarine fleet grows more capable.

Starting with the Prithvi series, this series consists of tactical, surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missiles developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. The three primary variants are Prithvi-I, Prithvi-II, and Prithvi-III.
Prithvi-I, developed for the Army, was the country's first indigenously built ballistic missile, with a range of around 150 km. Prithvi-II followed with extended range and improved accuracy for the Air Force, while Prithvi-III, developed for the Navy, added a longer range and heavier payload for use from ships. Together, the three variants formed the foundation on which India's later missile systems, including Agni, were built. Decades on, Prithvi remains a reminder of how far the programme has come since its earliest, most uncertain years.
Next on this list is Prahaar. Developed by DRDO, it is a solid-fuelled, quick-reaction, surface-to-surface missile with a range of about 150 km, designed to be more mobile, cheaper, and faster to launch than Prithvi. Unlike Prithvi, which requires more preparation time before launch, Prahaar can be fired within minutes of a decision being made.
Pralay is the latest addition to India's battlefield missile lineup. Built by DRDO, it has a range of roughly 150 to 500 km. Unlike a standard ballistic missile that follows a predictable arc, Pralay follows a manoeuvrable, low-altitude trajectory, making it significantly harder for enemy air defences to track and intercept. This combination of range, precision, and evasive flight path gives the Indian Army a modern, non-nuclear option for fast, decisive strikes on high-value battlefield targets.

Akash was India's first major step into indigenous air defence. It is a medium-range surface-to-air missile with a range of around 25 km and altitude coverage up to 20 km, designed to protect vulnerable areas and moving armies from aircraft, helicopters, and drones. In service with both the Army and the Air Force, Akash proved that India could build a credible SAM system.

Barak-8, jointly developed with Israel, extended India's air defence reach considerably further. Also known as the LR-SAM (Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile), it has a range of roughly 70 to 150 km and is built to intercept a wide range of threats, from aircraft and helicopters to cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles. It arms both naval destroyers and Air Force ground units, making it one of the few systems flexible enough to serve two branches of the military at once.

Project Kusha is India's most ambitious air defence effort yet, an indigenous, long-range SAM system developed by DRDO specifically to reduce dependence on Russian imports like the S-400. Designed with multiple interceptor variants reportedly capable of ranges up to 350 km, it is meant to eventually form a layered air defence shield alongside Akash and Barak-8, covering everything from short-range threats to long-range aircraft and ballistic missiles. Since Kusha is still in development and hasn't been publicly tested, any figures used here should be treated as provisional.
