The Indian Army is taking steps towards 'Make-in-India' in the defence sector by proposing to buy 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) for deployment along the borders with China and Pakistan. The proposal, which is worth over USD 1 billion (over ₹ 8,000 crore), is currently under discussion by the Ministry of Defence.
Indian Army Proposes Procurement of Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) Worth $1 BillionThese are to be manufactured by two private Indian companies - Tata and Bharat Forge. These guns have already been tested in different altitudes and terrains and so have been modified as per changed specifications that have come from the officials. The 155mm/52 calibre ATAGS howitzers underwent their final trials successfully at the Pokhran Field Firing Range (PFFR) from 26 April 26 to 2 May last year.
The acquisition of these advanced artillery gun systems will not only boost India's defence capabilities but also promote the development of indigenous defence technology and manufacturing. It will also provide a significant boost to the country's economy by creating jobs and promoting local industries.
If the proposal is approved, it will be a significant milestone in India's journey towards self-reliance in the defence sector. The government's 'Make-in-India' initiative aims to encourage local production, reduce import dependency, and make India a global hub for defence manufacturing.
