According to Army sources, a Captain has been recommended for life imprisonment by an Army court for the killing of three men in Amshipora, Shopian district in 2020. The court-martial of Captain Bhoopendra Singh, also known as Major Bashir Khan, was conducted after an investigation found that troops under his command had exceeded their powers under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act during the incident. The Jammu and Kashmir Police set up a Special Investigation Team, which charged three individuals, including Captain Singh, for staging the encounter in which Imtiyaz Ahmed, Abrar Ahmed, and Mohammed Abrar were shot and branded as terrorists. The Army's higher authorities will finalize the sentence.
The PDP and NC welcomed the court's recommendation and called for impartial investigations into other encounters, including those in Lawapora and Hyderpora. PDP chief and former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti emphasized the need for better accountability and oversight mechanisms within the armed forces to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. NC spokesperson Imran Nabi commended the Army's decision and said that justice had been served. The officer said that the Indian Army upholds ethical operations and has zero tolerance for human rights violations and misdemeanors. It is crucial for the armed forces to ensure that their personnel adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, going forward.
