On Monday, the White House issued a cautionary statement, expressing concerns about the Chinese military's ‘aggressiveness’ which has resulted in close encounters and near collisions with US forces both in maritime and aerial settings, and emphasising the potential for casualties in the near future.
National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, informed members of the press, ‘It won’t be long before somebody gets hurt. That’s the concern with these unsafe and unprofessional intercepts.’
Less than two weeks after a Chinese fighter jet crossed the trajectory of an approaching US warplane, the Pentagon disclosed on Saturday that a Chinese warship compelled a US naval destroyer to undertake evasive manoeuvers to prevent a collision.
According to Kirby, the actions were ‘part and parcel of an increasing level of aggressiveness’ by the Chinese military.
