The United States Air Force is in the process of developing a new type of helmet for its pilots, known as the Next Generation Fixed Wing Helmets (NGFWH), with pilots from the Raptor squadron currently testing them. According to an Air Force press release, the new helmets are lighter, cooler, and more equipped than their predecessors.
Engineers from the 46th Test Squadron and the 28th Test and Evaluation Squadron are overseeing the testing of the new helmets, while around five pilots from the 301st Fighter Squadron, a Reserve unit with the 43rd Fighter Squadron, are flying with them. The NGFWH provides pilots with a more comfortable and stable platform, without causing neck strain or discomfort.
Major Brett Gedman of the 301st Fighter Squadron noted that fighter pilots are known to experience long-term neck and back problems, so a lightweight helmet designed for the operator's well-being will have a positive impact on the health of the pilots during and after their service. The current helmets are more than 40 years old and require an upgrade.
