BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) has been named as one of the finalists in the Naval Heritage History and Command's competition to design the new National Museum of the US Navy.
The competition aims to create a modern museum that is open to the public and serves as a memorial to the US Navy's heritage, as well as a center for education and cultural events. Other finalists include DLR Group, Frank Gehry Partners, Quinn Evans, and Perkins&Will.
The new museum will consist of a new building and ceremonial courtyard, as well as the renovation of existing historical buildings on site. The competition focused on the design of six main building elements, including the general building shape and massing, the main entrance, the Arium, the marque gallery space, the ceremonial ‘honour’ courtyard, and the use of micro artifacts.
The campus will be approximately 270,000 square feet, with 100,000 square feet of gallery space. The Navy intends to build the museum on a site next to the Washington Navy Yard, with the land acquired either through land exchange or direct purchase, according to the Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro.
