The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is currently confronting a critical situation as it is required to decommission its ageing aircraft within the next ten years. As per a report, the PAF has decided to gradually retire a total of 250 aircraft from its fleet.
In a significant development, the PAF has initiated the process of phasing out its oldest fighter jet, the Mirage III, which was originally manufactured in France. Additionally, there are plans to retire another group of aircraft known as the Mirage 5.
So what strategy does the PAF have in place for replacing its ageing aircraft?
Pakistan's most feasible alternative lies in acquiring next-generation aircraft manufactured by China, such as the J-10C.
As part of its modernisation plan, the PAF has already procured 22 J-10 CE fighter jets. Moreover, under the terms of the agreement, the PAF has the option to acquire an additional 100 jets with specific enhancements.
The J-10C, a medium-sized fighter jet, belongs to the fourth-plus generation category. Notably, it features an improved jet engine compared to the JF-17, a lightweight fighter jet jointly developed by China and Pakistan and presently utilised by the PAF.
Although the J-10C offers a comprehensive integrated system encompassing weaponry, avionics, and combat capabilities, it falls short in terms of a larger active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar when compared to the radar used in the JF-17 Block 3 variant.
Nevertheless, the aircraft has the capability to carry more advanced air-to-air missiles, including the short-range PL-10 and the beyond-visual-range PL-15. This provides it with enhanced air combat capabilities.
The extensive procurement from China also takes into account the financial aspect, which Pakistan can utilise given its economic challenges.
The primary driving force behind Pakistan's modernisation budget is the financial necessity of securing more affordable loans from China.
Furthermore, Pakistan's current fleet of US-manufactured F-16s requires comprehensive upgrades and overhauls.
According to reports, Pakistan is also exploring the acquisition of KJ-500 early warning aircraft and Y-8 electronic warfare aircraft.
