In a recent joint confrontational exercise with the Air Force, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Army practised air defence by simulating attacks by a mock enemy J-20 stealth fighter jet. The exercise was held in the central region of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with the aim of connecting the command chain and firepower chain between the Army and Air Force units to hone their combat capabilities as an integrated system.
During the drill, the Air Force unit shared air information with the Army air defence brigade, and they were able to build up a network of air defence firepower quickly. Despite the opposing aircraft unit's immediate change of formation, the defending side was able to lock on to the targets. The exercise included the use of Army anti-aircraft artillery guns and missiles mounted on highly mobile vehicles, which gain significance in scenarios where low-flying stealth aircraft, such as the US F-35, may attempt to penetrate air defence from low altitudes. Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military aviation expert, emphasised that integrating and sharing real-time intelligence is key to dealing with different types of threats, including stealth aircraft and low-flying, small and slow drones.
