A sharp escalation of hostilities erupted along the long-disputed Thailand–Cambodia border on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 people, including 11 civilians and one Thai soldier and wounding dozens more. Thailand has responded by sealing its border crossings, recalling its ambassador, and launching airstrikes into Cambodian territory.
The violence began near the Ta Muen Thom temple area, where both sides have lodged mutual accusations of firing first. According to Thai authorities, Cambodia initiated the exchange with rocket and artillery fire, reportedly hitting civilian infrastructure, including a hospital in Surin. Cambodia, in turn, condemned Thailand’s F-16 airstrikes as violations of its sovereignty. Both countries have since expelled each other’s ambassadors, and villagers have been evacuated from the Thai side.
The skirmish marks the most serious border confrontation in over a decade, reigniting long-standing tensions over territorial claims. ASEAN leaders have urged both sides to de-escalate and return to dialogue.
