Sri Lanka Navy has joined the effort to expand the Kankesanthurai harbour facility, in order to aid the passenger ferry service project between Sri Lanka and India, set to commence later this month.
The Sri Lanka Navy is building a passenger terminal at Kankesanthurai, while the harbor expansion will enable the harbor to accommodate more traffic and provide better infrastructure, in response to a request from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation.
The project will connect the port of Kankesanthurai and Puducherry, providing an economical and convenient mode of transportation between the two countries. The Sri Lanka Navy has taken an active role in the facility expansion by enabling its manpower and expertise, following the directives of the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera.
The Navy began facility expansion on 1 February, with skilled manpower and industrial expertise, the press release said. In addition, the Navy undertook the construction of a 1,000 square metre passenger terminal for immigration and customs clearance for those who intend to use the ferry service. Last month, Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, announced that the passenger ferry service project is scheduled to start by the end of April.
