Lt Gen Harbaksh Singh is best remembered for his role as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Western Command during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.
At a time when Pakistan launched offensives across Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, it was under his overall command that Indian forces not only halted enemy advances but also mounted effective counter-offensives. His leadership played a crucial role in frustrating Pakistan's military objectives and stabilising the western front.
It was this wartime leadership that earned him the enduring title of the "Saviour of Punjab".
