The post of Chief of Defence Staff was created in 2019 to strengthen jointness among the three services. Under the appointment rules—first notified in 2019 and later amended in 2022—three-star and above officers, whether serving or retired within the last two years, are eligible for appointment, with a fixed tenure of three years or until the age of 65.
General Chauhan is the second officer to hold the post, after General Bipin Rawat, PVSM UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, who became India’s first CDS in 2020. The position had remained vacant following General Rawat’s death in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on 8 December 2021, until General Chauhan’s appointment in 2022.
