In a show of operational capabilities, India’s Navy on Saturday undertook the operation of a massive two/aircraft carrier battle group (CBG) in the Arabian Sea, comprising over 35 aircraft.
The Indian Navy emphasised in a statement that the exhibition of its naval capabilities serves as a testament to the nation's dedication to safeguarding its interests, fostering regional stability, and strengthening collaborative alliances in the wider maritime sphere.
Additionally, the Indian Navy stated that these operations showcased its ‘formidable capability’ to conduct uninterrupted air operations across the expansive maritime region. This achievement signifies a significant milestone in the Indian Navy's endeavour to enhance maritime security and extend its influence not only in the Indian Ocean but also in other areas beyond.
These operations take place at a time when China's presence in the Indian Ocean is increasing. Presently, India possesses two aircraft carriers.
The Indian Navy has been actively pursuing the acquisition of its third aircraft carrier for quite some time. Furthermore, discussions have been underway regarding the possibility of placing a follow-up order for India's first domestically built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, known as IAC 1.
The exercise also encompassed the harmonious coordination of two Aircraft Carriers, namely INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, along with a varied fleet of ships, aircraft, and submarines.
The aircraft carriers served as ‘floating sovereign airfields’, acting as launch platforms for a diverse range of aircraft. This includes MiG-29K fighter jets, Kamov helicopters, MH60R helicopters, Sea King helicopters, Chetak helicopters, and advanced light helicopters.
According to the Navy, these mobile bases can be deployed in various locations, providing greater mission flexibility, prompt responses to emerging threats, and continuous air operations to safeguard national interests on a global scale.
Furthermore, these mobile bases also serve as a reassurance to India's neighbouring countries, assuring them that the Indian Navy possesses the capability and readiness to support the collective security requirements of the region.
The Navy also emphasised that the prominent feature of two-carrier battle group operations serves as a strong testament to the crucial role of sea-based air power in achieving maritime superiority. It further stated that the importance of aircraft carriers will continue to be paramount in shaping the country's defence strategy and enhancing regional stability.
In a notable milestone, it was reported last month that a MiG-29K fighter aircraft successfully executed its inaugural night landing on the deck of INS Vikrant. This achievement is considered to be a significant accomplishment.
