The ship completed its sea trials in May 2024 where it was assessed for maneuverability, propulsion systems, and onboard equipment. Between March and April 2025, the ship underwent the air/mix gas diving system trials which included unmanned and manned dives at varying depths as well as trials of its Observation-class Remotely Operated Vehicle (OROV). This will be followed by "saturation diving trials".
At 118 m in length and around 9,350 t, INS Nistar is equipped with cutting-edge technology: Deep‑Sea Diving gear capable of 300 m saturation dives, side‑stage operations to 75 m, and ROVs handling missions down to 1,000 m.
Nicknamed "Guardian of the Deep", the vessel will serve as a “mother ship” for a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV), enhancing India's submarine rescue, search‑and‑rescue, and deep‑sea operational capabilities.
