The INS Vikrant, India's inaugural indigenous aircraft carrier crafted by Cochin Shipyard, has resumed its voyage following a mandatory 'guarantee refit'. This 45,000-ton warship now boasts enhancements, notably the integration of the Barak 8 medium-range surface-to-air missile launch platform. Additionally, it features the Israel-designed MF-STAR (multi-function surveillance, track, and guidance radar), pivotal as the vessel gears up for operational deployment in January.
The MF-STAR plays a critical role in detecting aerial threats, including aircraft, anti-ship missiles, and cruise missiles, while the Barak-8 missiles are capable of engaging these threats at ranges exceeding 80 kilometers.
As part of the Indian Navy's expanded surveillance framework, the Vikrant will not only rely on its onboard radars but also harness data from the Rukmini satellite, surveillance aircraft like the Boeing P8-I, and drones such as the Predator. This strategic integration significantly bolsters the Indian Navy's surveillance capabilities.
