Indian Navy secures $2.5 billion deal for 200+ BrahMos missiles

The Indian Navy is set to achieve a significant milestone for its domestic industry, as it prepares to procure over 200 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for deployment on all of its primary naval vessels.

The company formed by the collaboration between India and Russia has conducted recent missile test firings featuring a substantial amount of locally sourced components. Moreover, they intend to integrate an indigenous seeker into the missile as well.

‘The Indian Navy proposal to acquire more than 200 of these BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles is at an advanced stage and is expected to be cleared by the Defence Ministry soon,’ said senior defence officials.

In addition, the procurement will enable the Indian Navy to augment its arsenal with the missiles, which can be utilised on both naval vessels and mobile coastal missile batteries used by the force.

Over the past few years, the missile system has undergone noteworthy progressions, chiefly due to the Indo-Russian joint venture company expanding its strike range from 290 km to over 400 km.

The missile system's indigenous composition has undergone a boost, with several of its systems being upgraded and domesticated to increase the involvement of Indian manufacturers and industries.

Additionally, the missile system is being exported to the Philippines, with personnel from the Philippines Marine Corps having already received training at the BrahMos facilities in India. Furthermore, more groups from their organisation are scheduled to undergo training there.

Under the leadership of Atul Rane, Brahmos Aerospace is striving to achieve the $5 billion export objective established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As per the Chairman of BrahMos, subsequent to sealing the initial $375 million export deal with the Philippines, his team is setting its sights on reaching the $5 billion target by 2025.
