The Indian Navy launched its fourth Survey Vessel Large (SVL) named Sanshodhak at Kattupalli, Chennai. The SVL, meaning 'researcher', reflects the ship's primary role as a survey vessel.
The launch reinforces the government's commitment to indigenous shipbuilding under the 'Make in India' and aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
The SVL ships, equipped with advanced hydrographic equipment, will replace the existing Sandhayak Class survey ships and collect oceanographic data. With a length of 110 m and a displacement of 3,400 tons, the SVL ships will undertake hydrographic surveys, gather geophysical and oceanographic data, and serve in secondary roles such as defence and disaster response.
The project signifies a significant contribution to indigenous defence production and employment generation, promoting self-reliance in shipbuilding capabilities.
The contract for the construction of four SVL ships was signed between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), with construction being carried out by GRSE and L&T Shipbuilding.
