Indian Army World War II veteran Subedar Thanseia, renowned for his pivotal role at the Battle of Kohima, has passed away at 102. Hailing from Mizoram, his valour against formidable odds contributed significantly to an Allied victory. Officials announced his peaceful passing on March 31.
A senior official stated, ‘His remarkable life was defined by his valour at the Battle of Kohima, a crucial confrontation in World War II, and his significant role in establishing the legacy of the 1st Assam Regiment during their critical deployment at Jessami.’
During his tenure, Subedar Thanseia showcased unwavering dedication to his country that ‘went beyond the call of duty, earning him a revered place in the annals of India’s military history.’
The official also added, ‘His actions at Kohima, against formidable odds, contributed to a pivotal victory for the Allied forces, marking a turning point in the conflict in the East.’
Mourning the loss of Subedar Thanseia, the Army called him a ‘distinguished World War II veteran of the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment.’
Following his retirement, Subedar Thanseia remained a source of inspiration through his active involvement in veteran affairs and educational endeavours, continuing to serve his community and country with unwavering dedication.
His post-service life left a profound impact, instilling patriotism and resilience in the youth, as noted by officials. The tribute to Subedar Thanseia drew a large gathering from both military and civilian circles, including fellow soldiers from the Assam Regiment, who united to honour his memory.
The Army said, ‘His legacy leaves an indelible mark on the Indian Army, Assam Regiment and people of North East reminding us of the sacrifices made by our soldiers in the quest for peace and freedom.’
The Northeast, amidst grieving his departure, commemorates Subedar Thanseia's remarkable life and service. His dedication to our nation and his impact during World War II will forever be hailed as a ‘beacon of bravery, leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty,’ it said.
