Thal Sena Bhawan, Indian Army's future-ready headquarters embraces smart and green design. Designed by CP Kukreja Architects, this impressive headquarters will bring together all offices within a 40-acre campus, catering to 5,600 personnel with earthquake-resistant features, interactive corridors, and optimised spaces.
Thal Sena Bhawan, the newly-designed headquarters for the Indian Army by CP Kukreja Architects, is set to consolidate all its offices under one roof, creating a smart, green, and future-ready campus. Spanning across a sprawling 40-acre site, this architectural marvel has been carefully planned to cater to the needs of 5,600 personnel, incorporating earthquake-resistant features, interactive corridors, optimised spaces, and efficient circulation areas.
Unveiled by the Defence Minister of India, Mr Rajnath Singh, in January 2022, the design of Thal Sena Bhawan showcases the vision of CP Kukreja Architects, who won the bid for the project through a national design competition. The building's grandeur is on par with the United States' Pentagon, with a state-of-the-art design that embraces smart, green, and future-ready elements.
Inspired by the crest of the Indian Army, the architectural form features the symbolism of two swords held together, representing defence, and is crowned by the four-headed Lion Capital, embodying power, courage, pride, and confidence. The building's layout pays homage to New Delhi's North/South Block, with the East and West Wings specifically designed to accommodate directorates according to their logistical requirements.
Thal Sena Bhawan encompasses a ground plus seven-story main building, occupying a vast built-up area of 1,43,450 sqm. The structure adheres to Griha-IV norms and is designed to withstand earthquakes, ensuring longevity and resilience. The campus offers a range of amenities, including a common library, a peaceful internal courtyard for reflection, and water features that enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.
The design prioritises functionality and aesthetics, with interactive corridors, optimised spaces, and efficient circulation areas providing a welcoming environment for Army personnel. Smart workstations and a fully networked operations room enhance communication and work efficiency. The building is also designed to be disabled-friendly, enabling easy access to all areas of the campus.
With parking space for 3,000 vehicles, Thal Sena Bhawan boasts a grand atrium and a parade road that creates a striking entrance, including a VIP entrance for special guests. The project exemplifies sustainability by conforming to Griha-IV norms and embracing eco-friendly practices, ensuring a greener and more environmentally conscious workspace.
Thal Sena Bhawan stands as a testament to the Indian Army's strength, courage, and pride, while providing a modern and conducive environment for its personnel. As a symbol of progress and vision, this headquarters sets an inspiring precedent for future institutions of its kind. Located in New Delhi, India, the project is a remarkable achievement in architectural design and functionality, proudly serving as the Ministry of Defence's crown jewel.
