On August 1, Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh, AVSM, SM—decorated soldier and Special Forces veteran—will take over as the next Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), succeeding Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, who stepped into the role July 1, 2023.
An alumnus of the Indian Military Academy and commissioned into the elite 4 Para (Special Forces) in December 1987, Lt Gen Singh’s journey through the ranks has been forged in the crucible of multiple operations—Pawan in Sri Lanka, Meghdoot in Siachen, Rakshak in Kashmir, and Orchid in the Northeast.
His leadership has extended beyond borders, having served in UN Peacekeeping Missions in Lebanon and Sri Lanka. Closer home, he commanded the Rising Star Corps after taking charge as General Officer Commanding in April 2022. The Corps, raised in 2005 and headquartered in the scenic Yol cantonment of Himachal’s Kangra Valley, plays a critical role in India’s military preparedness.
Meanwhile, transitions are also underway in the Indian Navy. Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, AVSM, VSM, currently the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (since May 1, 2024), is set to take charge as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. Stepping into his shoes as the next Vice Chief of the Naval Staff will be Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, AVSM, NM, who will assume office on August 1.
