The Cardio Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre at the Army Institute of Cardio-Thoracic Sciences (AICTS, Pune) was inaugurated by Lieutenant General A.K. Singh, GOC-in-C, Southern Command.
This is the first such facility to be established in an AFMS hospital, providing a comprehensive Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Programme to patients suffering from heart and lung diseases.
The rehabilitation programme is tailored to individual needs and medically supervised, comprising endurance-building exercises, yoga, meditation and education to improve the overall quality of life of patients. A multidisciplinary healthcare team consisting of physiotherapists, dieticians, doctors, nurses and yoga teachers will work together to treat patients suffering from cardiac and/or pulmonary disorders, who are recovering from surgery/interventions or have physical limitations due to these disorders.
According to an official statement, patients with heart and lung diseases may experience a psychological burden from their illness even after treatment and require a holistic care programme to regain their earlier fitness levels. Therefore, rehabilitation programmes are essential in their recovery.
During the inauguration, Singh also visited the Virtual Reality Lab, which is the first of its kind in the country. The lab uses virtual reality technology as a research tool for surgical pre-planning of patients with complex congenital heart disease, as well as for medical education purposes.
