In light of the United Nations' declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets, the Indian Army has made a significant decision to include millet flour in the rations provided to soldiers.
This move aims to promote the consumption of millets and ensure that troops are supplied with native and traditional grains that have proven health benefits and are well-suited to geographical and climatic conditions. The inclusion of millets in soldiers' daily meals will help mitigate lifestyle diseases and improve their nutritional profile. The Indian Army has sought approval from the government to procure millet flour not exceeding 25 per cent of the authorised entitlement of cereals (rice and wheat flour) in rations for troops. The procurement and supply of millet flour will be based on demand and preference, with three popular varieties - bajra, jowar, and ragi - being issued to troops. Additionally, advisories have been issued to encourage the extensive use of millets in functions, canteens, and home-cooking. The Indian Army is also conducting centralised training of chefs to prepare wholesome, tasty, and nutritious dishes with millets. Special emphasis is being laid on introducing value-added millet items and snacks to troops deployed along the northern borders. Dedicated corners for millet foods are being set up in shopping complexes, and 'Know your Millet' awareness campaigns are being conducted in educational institutions.
