Following the completion of a significant jet engine agreement in preparation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the US, both nations are currently engaged in discussions regarding a "security supply and reciprocal agreement." Additionally, they are directing their attention towards collaborating on crucial emerging technologies such as hypersonic technology, underwater domain awareness (UDA), and advanced materials.
According to sources within the defence and security establishment, during the meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and visiting US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Monday, various subjects were discussed. These included matters concerning Pakistan and China, the security situation in the Asia Pacific region, as well as discussions between Austin and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
As claimed by the sources, Rajnath Singh has requested that Austin encourage American companies to increase their sourcing from India. This request comes in light of major deals that Indian companies have secured, particularly in the field of commercial aviation, as well as the establishment of maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities for both US defence and civil systems operating within India.
In addition, India has conveyed to the United States that the Biden administration needs to address the obstacles that currently hinder the purchase and transfer of technology from American companies to Indian firms.
According to sources, both parties have already commenced discussions regarding an agreement to facilitate the sharing of technology between them. It is anticipated that this process will be a ‘seamless affair’.
During the discussions, the jet-engine project, previously reported to be in its final stages of completion, was also a topic of conversation. The sources mentioned that both parties expressed congratulations on successfully reaching a deal.
The mega defence deal, which has been in progress for a decade, involves the collaboration between India's state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and the private American firm General Electric. Its objective is the joint manufacture of indigenous jet engines for fighter aircraft.
Sources reported that the deal in question pertains to the domestic manufacturing of GE F414 engines in India through technology transfer, as well as the development of a new engine variant. It is anticipated that the announcement of this agreement will take place during Prime Minister Modi's visit to the United States.
