Indian Army Plans to Introduce ‘Veer’ Ballistic Helmets for Sikh Soldiers

The Veer helmets have been designed keeping in mind the specific requirements of Sikh soldiers and can be worn over the traditional 'Patka' worn by them. The SCH 111 and SCH 112 helmets, also known as the Veer series, provide complete head protection to Sikh soldiers. Moreover, the Veer helmet is lightweight, ensuring that it can be worn for a longer duration without causing discomfort. The Indian MoD has emphasised that the modern-day soldier needs complete protection against the ever-evolving threats of warfare.

In May 2001, the Indian government opened the defence production domain for the private sector with the aim of enhancing indigenisation and self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Since then, several private companies have entered the domain and contributed significantly to India's capabilities in modernisation and indigenisation of defence manufacturing. MKU Limited is one such company that has made a significant contribution to the Indian Army's arsenal.

Notably, MKU became the first private defence firm in March 2022 to receive the Transfer of Technology (ToT) of the T-90 Main Battle Tank's driver night sight from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The ToT was initiated by the DRDO after careful consideration to provide the Indian Army's T-90s with MKU's Netro TD-5100 Driver Night Sight. The TD-5100 is a smart solution designed for the Indian T-90s, offering enhanced operational capabilities and situational awareness. It can also be used by other T-series tanks, BMPs, and armoured vehicles of the Indian Armed Forces.

On 16 February 2023, MKU Limited signed another ToT with the DRDO and the Defence Bioengineering and Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) to indigenise the production of Common Aircrew Helmets and Lightweight Integrated Aircrew Helmets. The collaboration is a significant boost to India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The use of specific protective equipment and clothing by fighter pilots and aircrew is mission-oriented, and the production of lightweight solutions is critical for enhancing the long endurance missions of the Indian Armed Forces.
