On Monday, General Manoj Pande, the Chief of the Indian Army, held a meeting with General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, his counterpart from Bangladesh. During the meeting, they engaged in conversations regarding multiple areas of shared interest and explored opportunities to enhance the existing bilateral defence and security connections.
As part of his two-day visit to Bangladesh, General Pande, who arrived earlier on Monday, had the opportunity to engage with Lt Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman, the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division. This marks General Pande's second visit to the country since assuming the position of Army Chief.
In July of the previous year, the Indian Army chief embarked on a visit to Bangladesh, marking his first official foreign trip since assuming the position of Chief of the Indian Army.
According to a tweet by the Additional Directorate General of Public Information, ‘General Manor Pande #COAS interacted with General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, Chief of Army Staff, #BangladeshArmy & Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Principal Staff Officer, Armed Forces Division, #Bangladesh and discussed aspects of mutual interest.’
Additionally, the Army chief participated in a solemn ceremony at Shikha Anirban, where he laid a wreath as a tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation of Bangladesh. Furthermore, he received a Guard of Honour at Senakunja and symbolically planted a tree, symbolising the enduring friendship and camaraderie between the two Armies.
Scheduled for Tuesday, General Pande is set to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Passing Out Parade (POP) of officer cadets belonging to the 84th 'Long Course' at the Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) in Chattogram.
Within the framework of the parade, the Army Chief will have the honour of awarding the prestigious 'Bangladesh India Friendship Trophy' to the most outstanding foreign cadet from a friendly foreign nation among the passing out course participants from the Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA).
This year, the inaugural trophy will be presented to Officer Cadet Everton from Tanzania.
The Army stated that this trophy is a reciprocal gesture in response to the 'Bangladesh Trophy and Medal' established at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun in December 2021. The Indian award is given to the best foreign cadet who successfully completes the course at the IMA.
On June 10, the Army chief is scheduled to review the Passing Out Parade (POP) at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun. During the ceremony, he will have the privilege of presenting the esteemed Bangladesh Medal and Trophy to deserving recipients.
