During his speech at the India-Africa Army Chiefs' Conclave in Pune, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande emphasised the importance of strengthening mutual capabilities in combating terrorism, which was one of the ten guiding principles for cooperation with Africa announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He highlighted the common threats of terrorism and violent extremism faced by both India and Africa and the potential adverse effects on their development goals. General Pande also mentioned the active involvement of the Indian armed forces in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Africa since 1965, with six Indian Army battalions currently deployed in the region.
He noted that the relationship between the defence forces of India and Africa is a vital component of the overarching partnership between the regions and can help both sides to be better prepared for emerging security threats.
General Pande expressed confidence in India's defence manufacturing industry and the government's efforts to create a business-friendly environment to nurture a vibrant and world-class defence manufacturing industry in the country.
He also highlighted the joint exercise with African armies and the potential for collaboration in defence manufacturing to enhance mutual learning and capability.
General Pande hoped that the Conclave would improve India-Africa defence relations and contribute to regional unification between Africa and India for their growth and security. The second edition of the Africa-India Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX- 2023) between India and 23 nations of the African continent commenced on 21 March in Pune, aiming to strengthen regional cooperation.
