Captain Shiva Chouhan, a Bengal Sapper of the Fire and Fury Corps in the Indian Army, made history in January 2023 when she became the first woman officer to be operationally deployed at Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battlefield. She completed a month's arduous training at Siachen Battle School with other personnel before being deployed to the Kumar Post. Despite unforgiving weather conditions and freezing winter temperatures, Captain Chouhan successfully completed 100 days at the post, where she led a team of Sappers responsible for numerous combat engineering tasks.
Captain Chouhan's journey to Siachen Glacier began with her childhood dream of joining the Indian Armed Forces. Despite losing her father at a young age, she showed unparalleled zeal during her training at Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai and was commissioned into the Engineer Regiment in May 2021. Her determination and leadership skills were evident when she successfully led the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition from Siachen War Memorial to Kargil War Memorial in July 2022, covering a distance of 508 km.
Based on her exceptional performance, Captain Chouhan was selected to undergo rigorous training at the Siachen Battle School, where she trained alongside other officers of the Indian Army. Her training included endurance training, ice wall climbing, avalanche and crevasse rescue, and survival drills. Despite facing various challenges, Captain Chouhan's unflinching commitment and grit enabled her to successfully complete the training and get inducted to the Siachen Glacier on 2 January.
Captain Chouhan's accomplishments serve as an inspiration to all women who aspire to serve their country and break barriers in male-dominated fields. Her dedication, leadership skills, and perseverance have made her a role model for many, and her achievements have paved the way for more women to follow in her footsteps.
