As part of its platinum jubilee celebrations, a bust of Col Khushal Chand, recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra and recognized as one of the saviors of Ladakh during the 1947-48 war with Pakistan, was unveiled at the 9 Dogra Battalion HQs Guard in Gwalior.
Hailing from Lahaul and Spiti, Col Kushal Chand served as the fourth kipper of the 9th Battalion of the Dogra Regiment in 1948. As a Major, he, along with another officer, volunteered to go to Leh to raise a local militia force and defend the Ladakh valley in 1948. Renowned for his crucial role in halting the advance of Pakistan forces into Ladakh during the 1947-48 war, he is esteemed as one of the 'Saviors of Ladakh,' alongside Thakur Prithi Chand, Bhim Chand, and Chewang Rinchen.
Major Kushal Chand skillfully conducted guerrilla warfare, creating the illusion for the enemy that he commanded a larger force than he actually had.
