An Army jawan named Gunner Desai Mohan has been arrested by Punjab Police for allegedly killing four soldiers at the Bathinda Military Station earlier in the month.
Mohan, who was the only eyewitness to the incident, had initially claimed to have seen two unidentified suspects in kurta-pyjama but has now confessed to committing the killings himself. He reportedly accused the four soldiers of physically abusing him for some time.
The Army had launched its own Court of Enquiry into the incident while the police were conducting a parallel investigation. The police did not believe Mohan's initial statement, as the chain of events was not adding up. According to an FIR filed by Major Ashutosh Shukla from 80 Medium Regiment, Mohan claimed to have spotted two masked men in kurta-pyjama after the killings. However, the postmortem had revealed that none of the four soldiers killed had any axe injuries and were all shot dead with an INSAS rifle.
Army sources had admitted that the case seemed to be one of targeted killings, in which the suspect or suspects specifically attacked the four. It is unclear what further action will be taken in this case, but Mohan is expected to be produced in court on Monday.
