The Indian Army has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) to establish green hydrogen projects in the Army's facilities using the Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) model. NTPC REL is a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, with a 3.6 GW renewable energy capacity under construction. The primary objective of the MoU is to reduce the Army's dependence on fossil fuels, streamline logistics, and expedite decarbonisation. The MoU was signed by Mohit Bhargava, CEO of NTPC REL, and Lieutenant General Rajinder Dewan of the Indian Army. The two parties will jointly identify potential sites for green hydrogen projects that will provide electricity gradually.
NTPC REL will also design, develop and install renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind, for the Indian Army. The MoU signals an advanced approach to modernisation by the Indian Army and NTPC's commitment to assist the nation in its decarbonisation goals. This agreement is a first of its kind and paves the way for energy security for the country's defence lines, according to a statement from the Union Power Ministry. The Indian Army is looking to decrease its reliance on fossil fuels for power generation and heating, and the NTPC Group has set an ambitious goal of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, with 3.2 GW already installed.
