The Indian Army and state disaster management teams are engaged in rescue operations on the Gangtok-Natu La road near Milestone 15, where an avalanche struck, resulting in the loss of seven lives.
The police and troops of the Trishakti Corps are also providing assistance in the search and rescue efforts. Several survivors have been successfully rescued so far, and the injured are being transported to the hospital in the state capital, Gangtok. Rescue and clearance operations are still ongoing, as confirmed by a senior police official. Nathula Pass, located on the border with China and renowned for its scenic beauty, is a popular tourist destination. The avalanche occurred early in the morning at the 14th milestone on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, trapping an estimated 25-30 tourists, according to defense sources. Swift rescue operations were launched by the Border Roads Organisation, resulting in the successful rescue of 22 people, including 6 from a deep valley. Additionally, approximately 350 individuals and 80 vehicles that were stranded on the road due to snow blocking the route from Nathu La were safely brought back, as reported by officials. The rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of all affected individuals.
