A New Era in Special Forces: Captain Deeksha Paves the Way for Female Officers

Captain Deeksha C. Mudadevannanavar's appointment to the Indian Army's Parachute Regiment's top special forces outfit is a moment of immense pride for all Indians, particularly women, as she becomes the first female officer to hold this position.

Hailing from Davangere in Karnataka, Captain Deeksha was commissioned into the MH Golconda of the Indian Army through the Short Service Commission (SSC) in October 2019. Following her appointment, she underwent the demanding MOBC training at the Army Medical Corps Centre in Lucknow to prepare for her role.

Captain Deeksha has received specialised training to provide medical support to special forces during critical operations. She has undergone rigorous training alongside special forces units to equip herself with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively respond to challenging situations.

As part of Operation Dost, Captain Deeksha was dispatched to Turkey to aid in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that caused widespread devastation and loss. Utilising her specialised training, she was able to offer vital support and care to those affected by the tragedy.

While Indian Army doctors undergo similar training as their combat counterparts, their primary responsibility is to provide critical medical support to troops. Their role is essential to the success of Para SF battalions, ensuring that soldiers receive timely and effective medical care in the field.

Upon completing the initial level of the course, Captain Deeksha was posted to the 303 Field Hospital in Leh's Tangtse. Prior to this, she had made two unsuccessful attempts to join the Parachute Regiment due to concerns about her physical capabilities. Despite these setbacks, she persevered and ultimately succeeded in securing her position within the Indian Army's special forces.

Under the guidance of her commanding officer, Colonel Shivesh Singh, Captain Deeksha was encouraged to reapply for the military. Despite facing another setback during the selection process, she persisted and ultimately earned a spot in the Paratrooper selection program. Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was selected to join the Special Forces unit in December 2022.
