The Indian Air Force accomplished a night landing of the C130-J transport plane at the Kargil airstrip, marking the first night landing at this high-altitude airstrip near the Line of Control (LoC) in Ladakh. The Advanced Landing Ground, situated at approximately 10,000 feet, poses challenges with its restricted unidirectional approach and rough terrain.
During this mission, the IAF utilized the C-130J to airlift Garud commandos, the IAF's special operations unit, demonstrating the capability to conduct round-the-clock operations for clandestine purposes. The C-130J Super Hercules, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, serves as an advanced tactical airlifter for the IAF in special operations and humanitarian endeavors.
Additionally, the C-130J employed terrain masking tactics in this operation, using natural or man-made terrain to obstruct enemy radar detection and maintain a covert approach.
