In a landmark event, President Droupadi Murmu took a sortie in a Rafale fighter jet at the Ambala Air Force Station in Haryana, becoming the first Indian President to fly in this advanced aircraft.
The sortie took place on October 29, 2025, and underscored her role as Supreme Commander of India’s armed forces, as well as the significance of the Rafale fleet in strengthening the country’s defence capabilities.
Before her, former Presidents APJ Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil had flown in Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets from the Lohegaon Air Force Station near Pune in 2006 and 2009, respectively.

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, PVSM, AVSM, the Chief of Air Staff, was also present during the President’s sortie at the Ambala Air Force Base. He also flew in a separate aircraft from the same airbase.
The Rafale fighter jets, manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France, were inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2020 as part of a major modernization drive. Equipped with advanced radar systems, long-range air-to-air missiles, and precision-guided weaponry, the Rafale has significantly boosted India’s air combat capabilities.
