India’s defence modernisation drive continues to gather momentum with key additions to both naval and air capabilities, underscoring a growing focus on self-reliance and strategic preparedness. The week began on a high note for the defence infrastructure of the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.
The Indian Navy on Monday procured three frontline platforms built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). The additions include the advanced guided-missile frigate Dunagiri, survey vessel Sanshodhak, and anti-submarine warfare shallow-watercraft Agray.
While Dunagiri is equipped with BrahMos anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, along with advanced defence systems, Sanshodhak is equipped with advanced systems for conducting full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys, and Agray is armed with lightweight torpedoes and anti-submarine warfare rockets.
These platforms are expected to significantly enhance maritime operations, surveillance, and anti-submarine capabilities, strengthening India’s presence in strategic waters.
On the other hand, the Indian Air Force is set to bolster its air defence network with the procurement of two advanced mountain radars from Bharat Electronics Limited. As per the official statement in PIB, the deal, valued at ₹1,950 crore, includes associated infrastructure and is aimed at strengthening national security. The procurement also aligns with the government’s push to reduce dependence on foreign defence equipment and promote indigenous manufacturing.
Together, these developments highlight India’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its defence infrastructure while advancing domestic production capabilities in the sector.
