Republic Day Traditions Explained: The Meaning Behind the Salute, the Parade, and the Rituals

Seventy-seven years on, India marks its journey as a sovereign, democratic Republic with a celebration that’s as disciplined as it is grand. Republic Day isn’t just another government holiday—it’s a bold statement of who we are as a nation. As dawn breaks on 26 January, the country comes alive with perfectly timed marches, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and a clear display of military strength and preparedness.

From grand parade to marching contingents to the thunderous 21-gun salute and dramatic aerial flypasts, every military ritual on this day has a story to tell. In celebration of the 77th Republic Day, we dig into the meaning of parades, marches, salutes, and firing ceremonial guns—and what these powerful traditions truly stand for.

The Republic Day parade begins with a quiet but powerful ritual of respect for the soldiers who gave their lives protecting India’s sovereignty. Before the celebrations and marches begin, the Prime Minister pays tribute at Amar Jawan Jyoti at the National War Memorial, honouring the fallen on behalf of the nation.

The eternal flame burns day and night, symbolising India’s never-ending gratitude to its brave soldiers. As the Armed Forces lay wreaths in remembrance, the ritual reminds us that the freedom we celebrate today was earned through sacrifice.

The next ritual forms the most solemn moments of the Republic Day celebrations—the flag hoisting ceremony led by the President of India. As the Tricolour rises and the National Anthem fills the air, the nation stands still in collective respect.

At the same time, the Armed Forces fire ceremonial cannons in perfect coordination. Seven cannons are fired three times each, with carefully timed gaps, lasting exactly as long as the National Anthem.

This tradition is known as the 21-gun salute, one of the highest honours in military practice. Each gunshot is a sign of respect—paying tribute to the Republic, the Constitution, and the armed forces who continue to protect India’s freedom.

The Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path is the heart of the celebrations. What unfolds is not just a spectacle but a carefully planned showcase of India’s military readiness and cultural diversity.

Marching contingents from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force move with precision, reflecting discipline, coordination, and preparedness. Alongside them, vibrant tableaux from different states tell stories of India’s heritage, achievements, and aspirations—reminding us that strength lies as much in unity as in force.

Why We March: Discipline in Motion

The march-past is one of the most recognisable and anticipated traditions of Republic Day. Marching contingents from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, CAPFs, and other elite and special forces take their place along Kartavya Path, presenting a united front of India’s defence forces.

Every step, turn, and salute is rehearsed for months, reflecting the discipline, precision, and teamwork that define military life. The march-past tradition shows how India’s defence forces function in real situations—moving as one unit, coordinating seamlessly, and staying ready to protect the nation in times of duty, crisis, and conflict.

As the parade reaches its finale, all eyes turn skyward. Fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters of the Indian Air Force roar overhead in perfectly timed formations. This aerial flypast represents technological strength, air superiority, and constant vigilance. It is a reminder that India’s defence extends beyond land and sea—ready to protect its skies at all times.

From the tribute at Amar Jyoti to the thunder of a 21-gun salute, from disciplined march-pasts to soaring flypasts overhead, Republic Day rituals may differ in form, but they carry one shared spirit. Each tradition reflects the values that hold the Republic together—duty, sacrifice, unity, and pride. Together, they remind us that India’s strength lies not just in its diversity, but in the discipline and resolve that bind it as one nation.
