Exclusive Excerpt: From Boots to Brotherhood—A Chronicle of Cadet Life and Lifelong Bonds
Military academies often appear mysterious to the outside world. Their gates mark the boundary between ordinary life and a world shaped by discipline, tradition, and an almost unspoken code of camaraderie. Inside these spaces, young cadets are not merely students; they are individuals in the process of becoming something larger than themselves—leaders, officers, and custodians of a long martial heritage.
The book From Boots to Brotherhood: Cadets, Camaraderie and Chronicles by Shivam Sharma offers a glimpse into this transformative journey. Set in the halls and parade grounds of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (AFPI), the narrative traces the experiences of cadets who enter the Academy as boys and leave with a sense of purpose that will shape the rest of their lives.
Founded by the Government of Punjab under the leadership of Parkash Singh Badal, AFPI was envisioned as a pathway for young aspirants to join the Indian Armed Forces. Often described as a ‘mini–National Defence Academy’, the institute prepares cadets academically, physically, and mentally for the demanding life that awaits them in military service. Over the years, its cadets have gone on to prestigious institutions such as the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Air Force Academy, and Indian Naval Academy—continuing the state’s proud legacy of service.
But statistics and achievements tell only part of the story. What truly defines academy life are the friendships forged during hardship, the laughter that breaks through rigid routines, and the shared struggles that quietly turn strangers into brothers. That spirit lies at the heart of From Boots to Brotherhood.
Below is an exclusive excerpt from the book, offering a vivid glimpse into the moment when a new director arrives at the academy—bringing with him an atmosphere of anticipation, discipline, and the unmistakable promise of change.

This excerpt is from the chapter called: ‘The Birth of the Titans’
“At the crack of dawn, the new academic session brought with it a storm of change that swept through the Academy. With it came a new leader at the helm—a stern yet charismatic man, Major General Chauhan. His reputation preceded him. They said he had a way of spotting trouble like a hawk from a mile away, and if you made it onto his radar, you’d better pray. But for us cadets, this change meant only one thing: new rules, new energy, and a fresh set of challenges.
Our first encounter with the general was during one of those morning musters. He stood tall on the stage, eyes scanning over us like a drill sergeant measuring the mettle of his troops. As he spoke, his voice boomed through the Academy grounds with the kind of authority that made even the wind pause to listen.
‘Welcome, cadets, to a new chapter of your journey,’ he began, his gaze sharp and unwavering. ‘Believe you me, here, you are not just individuals—you are part of a unit, a team, a family. Unity is not just a word; it’s your survival.’
We all stood in formation, nodding like eager little soldiers, our faces set in serious expressions as if we really understood. But behind those facades, each of us was dealing with our own inner chaos. And oh, if only the new director knew what a mess lay beneath that disciplined exterior! Because, despite our perfectly lined-up rows and synchronised salutes, a storm was brewing just beneath the surface—a storm that would soon break the ‘Titan’ course in two.
It had been two weeks since we first set foot in the Academy, and by now, we’d figured out how things worked. The endless PT sessions, the constant challenges from seniors, and the rhythm of Academy life were becoming familiar. But the most important lesson our seniors drilled into us was about the squadron spirit. To us, the squadron was not just a group of cadets—it was our family, identity, and pride. Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie were more than just names. Each came with a legacy, and it was our job to either uphold it or redefine it.”

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of From Boots to Brotherhood is its acknowledgement that not every story can be fully told. Certain memories remain locked within the walls of the academy—shared only by those who lived them.
Drawing from his own time at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute, the author brings alive moments of camaraderie, mischief, and resilience, reflecting on the brotherhood he forged with his fellow cadets during those formative years.
This sense of exclusivity is part of what makes military camaraderie so powerful. The bonds formed during early training years often outlast postings, ranks, and even decades of service. For many officers, it is these academy memories—the pranks, punishments, friendships, and midnight conversations—that remain the most cherished.

Books about military life often focus on battles and strategy. From Boots to Brotherhood, however, turns its attention to something equally important: the making of an officer long before the battlefield.
Through its stories of cadet life at AFPI, Shivam Sharma offers readers a rare window into a world where discipline meets youthful chaos, where rivalry turns into loyalty, and where strangers gradually become brothers.
For anyone curious about the formative years behind India’s future officers—or simply fascinated by stories of friendship forged under pressure—this chronicle promises both nostalgia and inspiration.
Because in the end, the journey truly begins with a pair of boots—but it leads to something far greater: brotherhood.
