Guardians of the Nation: The K9 Army

When we think of the Indian Army, images of soldiers who sacrifice their comfort for the protection of the country strike our minds. Surprisingly, there is another group of silent heroes who contribute effectively to our nation's security.

In 2016, during a rescue at Siachen Glacier, two brave dogs named Dot and Misha worked tirelessly alongside 150 Army personnel in extreme conditions. They helped recover the bodies of nine soldiers and found Lance Naik Hanumanthappa alive, buried under thick ice at an altitude of 19,500 feet. Their outstanding contribution is noteworthy.

Why Does the Army Need Dogs?

Ever wondered why dogs take the spotlight in the preferred lists of animals for Armed missions? A sharp sense of smell—that's what dogs bring to the table. They can sniff out explosives, drugs, and even hidden people, making them extremely useful for detecting various substances and locating individuals. Other qualities which attract them over other species are trainable nature, strong communication with humans, and a history of partnership. They are capable and learn things faster than even any speedy rabbit.

Think about teaching a dog a trick, and before you know it, they have mastered it like a champ. This fast-learning ability makes them like the brainiest students in class, always ready to impress with their new skills.

Role in Army Operations

Dogs have been an integral part of Army operations for ages. A key role that dogs play in the Army is explosive detection. For example, during security checks at checkpoints, specially trained dogs can swiftly identify even small traces of explosives. This capability helps prevent potential threats and ensures safety. Additionally, in scenarios where time is critical, such as earthquake aftermaths, highly trained search and rescue dogs can locate survivors buried under debris. Ultimately, they save lives and hence are indispensable.

Dogs can form close friendships with their human partners. Even during confidential and vital missions, the army trusts dogs. For instance, trained dogs excel in dense forest rescue missions, using their keen sense of smell to find missing people. This shows their effective partnership with humans, as they work together to locate people in challenging situations.

The company of dogs has a positive impact on the mental well-being of soldiers. Their presence offers solace and emotional support, especially in demanding circumstances and high-pressure situations. Studies have shown that interacting with dogs can lead to reduced levels of stress hormones and increased levels of oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and relaxation. For instance, soldiers often find relief in interacting with dogs, which helps boost morale.

Their service and sacrifice remind us of the special bond between humans and animals and inspire us to cherish and respect all forms of life. These four-legged fellows have earned a special place in our hearts, and their contributions are cherished.
